Touchy subject. But yes they do. The degree to which the matter varies, and different people have different preferences but looks absolutely matter. Online dating is proof enough, no one swipes at an unattractive picture. And in real life, we tend to favor people who are attractive in any context. Say something got stolen in a crowd, who do you think would be a suspect? ( Looks can be made of social constructs, tattoos, piercings, clothing…but physical attributes do play a major role). At least this is what I think :
Assuming you’re a guy, it might not be that you’re ugly, you’re just short (relax I’m probably shorter than you) . Women generally tend to prefer taller men and will automatically pass short people. And this I’ve discovered isn’t in relation to their height, you may be taller than her but shorter than other men. So, this height thing is in relation to other men. And if evolution is our base, being drawn to taller, more muscular men makes perfect sense.
Weight matters in looks. This is no way to shame or demean anyone. Being healthy and in shape affects much more than just dating. I have a friend, an awesome guy, he bulked up and he’s been turning heads now compared to when he was petite. Which is weirdly the opposite with women. You’ve probably seen the transformations which people marvel at. ( weight works differently culturally, in some curvy women are attractive, in some, not so. But for gents, you know).
Being healthy-looking also matters. People generally look for these things without noticing. If a person appears sickly, chances are they won’t be approached as much. Why it’s like that? Psychology!
Hygiene. Oh, the pits. That’s all, that one you can assume away and you’ll be right.
After factoring in all the looks, there’s more to consider however. This is where things get awesome, age, social status, religion, race, intelligence, occupation, etc come into play. These alter certain look preferences. So there’s hope after all. And connections, energies and vibes are a real thing.
